Latin Flute: Flute Professor & French Flute soloist, (my flute teacher) Alain Marion used to say he was proud of ‘the sound of the sunshine’ in his flute and of his ‘Latin fighting spirit’ . Originally from Marseille, he would often lovingly goad his flute students into being expressive and open-hearted’ -from An Australian in Paris

There is something about Latin flute music – music from Latin cultures, that resonates in me… perhaps being an Australian flute player it is the feeling of warmth and sunshine in the sound. By Latin I don’t mean the genre of music called Latin I mean music that is inspired by Latin culture. When I hear a flute sound that has affection, is communicative and open, it speaks straight into my heart
In my early days as a chamber musician in the group Posh-I was inspired by, and playing the Latin rhythms of composer John Huie. I love to dance and when I dance, my favourite music to dance to is Latin flute music!
After my first two hit classical albums Nocturnes and Preludes for Flute and Mozart’s Flute
A third ‘big’ CD/ Album Apasionada : French & Hispanic pieces for Flute, could be described as a Latin flute Album.
I had an amazing line-up of talent for this recording:
Gerard Willems- piano, Gregory Pikler-Guitar, Amanda Thane-soprano, Louise Johnson-Harp, The Gagliano Sting Quartet, Ian Cleworth-Percussion, Max McBride-Double Bass with sound engineer the incredible Peter Cobbin, who is now at Abbey Road Studios London.
Crazy times ALERT: Check out rap supergroup Migos -their recent song Bosses Don’t Speak uses my Latin flute in a loop-an excerpt taken from Spanish Love Song (Apasionada album) Here’s the original version Spanish Love Song – Flute & Guitar … you have to listen pretty carefully to hear the linking material- my flute in the two versions!
For me the thread and passion of Latin music can be applied in different degrees to all music…
Working with my friend and mentor, Maestro Richard Bonynge in the recording Mozart’s Flute, I was privileged to be influenced by his knowledge and understanding of belcanto & the Italian vocal line, which was applied to our interpretation of the works.
The album Brazil with Slava Grigoryan was another journey into this Latin music.
