An expert in the French Flute School and considered to be a major early influencer in classical music, Jane Rutter is known for her onstage warmth. She is a musician who brilliantly conveys passion, sparkling technique and elegance of expression through her divine flute playing. A non-resident fellow of the Australian Institute of Music, Jane is an award-winning TV presenter and multi-ARIA (Australian Grammy) nominee who has appeared as soloist with many orchestras including The Australian Chamber Orchestra, and on the same bill as Pavarotti, José Carreras, Richard Bonynge, The Manhattan Transfer, Janis Siegel, Tina Arena, Tommy Emmanuel, Simon Tedeschi, Tommy Tycho, Michael Crawford, Slava & Leonard Grigoryan, Teddy Tahu-Rhodes, Peter Cousens, Tamara-Anna Cislowska, Peter Coleman-Wright, Elena Kats-Chernin, Sam Neill and others.
Jane Rutter is an Australia Day Ambassador and was one of Who Magazine’s 30 Most Beautiful People. In 2007 Limelight Magazine depicted her as a leading female influencer in the world of Classical Music. Jane has been featured on 60 Minutes, in Vogue Magazine, and is a household name in Australia. She is in demand as an Artistic Director and composer. Her Live at Lunch series at The Concourse, Chatswood is one of Australia’s most successful lunch time concert series.
Awarded a French Government scholarship, Jane studied in Paris with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Alain Marion and Raymond Guiot. She has lectured flute, performance pedagogy and chamber music at her Alma Mater, The University of Sydney’s The Sydney Conservatorium of Music
Jane performs regularly in Paris and around the world: from recital halls to the Sydney Opera House, from music festivals to theatre and cabaret venues. Her early chamber jazz group, POSH, (reformed as Third Culture World Chamber Music) was a forerunner of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project.
Together with Australian international jazz legend Don Burrows, Jane Rutter expanded perceptions of the instrument by experimenting with the flute as a percussion tool—an approach that later developed into the international phenomenon of flute beatboxing, influencing a generation of contemporary players.
The Australian Elizabethan Trust awarded Jane Rutter a fellowship grant that culminated in a DVD and soundtrack album, An Australian In Paris which topped the Classical charts in Australia, and is considered a definitive study of the Rampal Flute School.
From her first iconic album, Nocturnes and Preludes for Flute with Gerard Willems, Jane’s sublime flute playing has seen a further 27 albums released including: Mozart’s Flute, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, French Kiss, Flute Spirit and others. 2025 saw the release of albums no. 27 and 28: AMORE: Timeless Italian Flute and Guitar, and Meditations on Australia
