We musicians are self-sufficient: as a flutist I have always spent a significant amount of time on my own practising joyfully every day. This more placid pace has afforded me extra time… It’s also provided me the opportunity to work on projects I’d set aside due to my frenetic existence.
The last few months have been quite hectic for me. I don’t know if any of you flute players / musicians have the same issue, but I always seem to gravitate to a quick Instagram post or a quick Facebook post, rather than spending time on my flute blog.
There is considerable controversy around Australia Day, and I have empathy with those who are upset by the date, its title and the dark side of what it represents. Nonetheless, having been asked for a number of years as a flutist to participate as an Australia Day Ambassador, I felt honoured to accept.
As Artistic Director of the popular Lunchtime Concert series, Live at Lunch, I’m thrilled to announce our 6th Season in 2018, at the World-class Concert Hall of The Concourse, Chatswood in Sydney, Australia.
I was involved in the gentle Reawakening Open Day last week at the late Diane Cilento’s Karnak Playhouse Far North Queensland. So thrilled to see such a big turnout, the day involved brilliant activities and circus performances by members of Wilde Applause Creative Productions, three talks by Giovanna Cilento Volpe and myself and three flute performances.
I love music that has a melodic and harmonic narrative. My new #WorldMusic Album #ThirdCulture is a good example – John Huie’s gorgeous pieces (for flute, guitar, Chinese banjo, percussion and bass) take us on an evocative journey… Xiao Ma means Little Horse
The sound of the Flute can connect us on a spiritual & meditative level. If you need to CHILL, a flute meditation piece I wrote (album #FluteSpiritdreamsandImprovistations). Titled Yugali, Pan
Here’s a quick interview in which we discussed how there are so many great flute players in the world now (perhaps thanks to the French Flute School!), so competition is tough. A piece of advice from Monsieur Guiot on how to stay within the Classical Flute World whilst at the same time attracting an audience!
It’s rare that I omit Debussy’s Syrinx from my classical flute recitals. The piece is so definitional for all flute-players, and helps to define the importance of the instrument as the oldest known to man.
